Several times I look into my life and I asked myself if I am a boring person? Most Fridays, I hear my colleagues say they will be going to the movies, clubbing, partying to have fun and to unwind in various places in the cause of a break or vacation. A times, they ask me if I had plans for the weekend and I say no or I tell them that I intend putting my thoughts together and developing them into write ups, spending some time at home with my wife, attending church programs and also visiting family members.
My Boss in the office believes in hard work, team work and also having fun. He has made us realize that life is not about work, work and work. He believes that we can have fun and still be at the top of our game. As a result of this and my thoughts about having fun and being a boring person, I came across Ecc 4:8 ( NIV) which says:
“There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
After reading the above verses, I realized that some of us are short changing ourselves by working from morning till late in the night. We don’t have time for and create time for ourselves. We have become so stingy to ourselves that we can’t go out with families, friends and even visit with people. Our lives have become predictable, boring and annoying.
Also, many of us work from morning till night without resting. We end up having a boring life and falling ill. Others as a result of the kind of work they do, they work from Monday till Sunday week upon week. They don’t have time for themselves and family. Their lives can easily be predicted because of their daily routine. We have become like robots that have been programmed to work without resting.
What is Fun? Whatever amuses you, your family and friends could be seen as fun. It could be anything that can make someone laugh or smile, entertain (someone) in a light and pleasant way and anything that gets the attention of (someone) in a pleasant way as time passes and brings you and your loved ones together. It makes you happy and relieves you of stress, pressure and so on. Many of us have defined fun in various ways and by the things we do. Some people go partying, dancing, singing, clubbing and so on when they want to have fun. Some go to the movies, football viewing centers to view football matches just to have fun. While others drink, sleep, rest, dance, play games and do other things to have fun. Reading the bible, praying, worshiping God, attending church meetings, preaching to people are also great ways of having fun.
But one thing about having fun is that it is relative. What one calls fun could be different from what someone else calls fun. Some may prefer clubbing, climbing mountains, fishing as their way of having fun. So, having fun could be what each person defines it to be. We should not use ourselves as the standard for everything. What you call fun could be seen as foolishness by someone else.
Having fun can build your relationship with your friends, partner, spouse, family and so on. It relieves you of anxiety, pressure, stress and so on. It also helps your health system and helps you to think. However, there is a limit to what we can call fun. If having fun puts you and others at risk or danger, then that is not fun but destruction. Whatever you do, make sure it is moderate, descent, bonding, and so on. Don’t get drunk and end up in a gutter and say you are having fun. Also, don’t have fun and destroy yourself. Anything you call fun which makes you degrade, embarrass, destroy and endanger yourself and others, you should desist from.
Try as much as possible to enjoy what you are doing. Create fun out of what you do and have fun in it. It helps you to do the job with happiness despite the environment in which you find yourself. Our lives should not be like what the scriptures says below:
Psalm 127:2 says, “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves”.
You can be a good Christian, husband, wife, parent, business man, professional and young person, student and still be a fun loving person. God is not against you and I having fun. Having fun should not be anything that defiles you, brings shame and make you sin against God. Our God created us to be fun loving people and not angry and boring set of people. Wilson Ileogben
