JUST THINKING:
Creating an accomplished impression about us is really driving many of us into foolish acts. We tend to create a successful mindset and ambience around ourselves so that we can create a false image of ourselves. In 2008, I bought a new phone worth N51,000 to create a big man impression about me. I bought the phone after a good friend of mine had bought his and also told me about it.
This friend of mine was earning far better than I was earning although we were in the same sector but different organizations. A Vice President of the organization I was working for also had the phone and a few senior staffs as well. I felt "stupidly big" because a Senior Manager (Vice President) and I were using the same phone. My friend, the VP and others who had the same phone could easily afford it but I was earning stipend compared to what they earned then.
Guess what, the phone was pick-pocketed from me in a bus on my way home from church. That was how N51, 000 went down the drain. I couldn't afford it anymore. I had to buy a smaller phone I could afford and it took me some time to buy it. What a waste of time, resources and hard work on my part. My friend whom I wanted to emulate also got pick-pocketed but he bought a higher model of that same phone brand some days later which was more expensive.
Recently, a guy made the same mistake I made back then. He recently bought a phone worth N92,000 and after three days it fell and the screen got broken. This guy is still trying to get his footings and he is not a graduate.
People make and will keep making this mistake until our eyes are opened to the fact that all these things we kill ourselves over are vanity.
Ecclesiates 1:2 says, "Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher;“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
My take on this is that we do not respect what we earn. After working for longs hours, the hard-earned salaries or wages are spent on frivolities. This shows we do not respect our earnings and also do not have regards for our lives, families, time, bodies, energy, health we sacrifice to earn a living. We also do not appreciate the confrontations, insults, conspiracies against us and queries we encounter at work on a daily basis.
