JUST THINKING
I am seeing some things under the sun that make me think, think and think again. One of them is the show off, the attention seeking, the recognition craving, the fame longing and impression being created that one is good, philanthropic, nice, liberal, concerned for the poor, the underprivileged and the misfortuned in life. What am I really talking about?
The attitude of giving to people, doing something great, going the extra mine for people and a community and affecting people but making a show of it to the world. A lot of people now do it because others are doing it. It has become a trend that everyone gives to people and show it Off in the dailies, on social media and through other media. What are you seeking by doing it?
The Bible says in Matthew 6:1-4:
"1.Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4. that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly".
Your giving should not be a show off. It should be between you and God. By seeking popularity through your giving, you have already missed it. You could become famous in the eyes of men which is no reward at all but you will not get God's reward. In fact, your reward is popularity which will become transient compared to God's blessings. I know that some people do it in private but one thing or the other blow it out. In that case, it is different. But in a situation where selfish people who do not really have the people at heart but wanting to be recognized as good and nice, give and make a noise about it have gotten their reward already. True and lasting reward comes when you do things in secret which God will give you openly.
