JUST THINKING
The gospel of Jesus is not for comedy nor is it a comedy but it is the power of God unto salvation. However, by being trendy and up to date, we have started mixing the gospel (what Jesus came to do and died for) with comedy just to amuse and entertain people.
There was a debate some time ago if Comedy is a part of the gospel or not and I wonder why. I see programs, Crusades, revival meetings being organized and comedians are invited to "minister" in those meetings. Some of these guys are not even born again, some do not pray and even read the Bible and we invite them to make people laugh. The gospel is a spiritual thing and the people are playing with it. We can see very clearly what the bible says that many will be deceived in the last day.
Have you seen or heard that Reinhald Bonnke calling comedians to "minister" along side him in his evangelical meetings? If you need to entertain people, you have the Holy Spirit who can fall or come on people and they will laugh, sing, dance in the spirit and even get healed, saved, delivered and so on.
I will use a musical program that was held last week at TBS to buttress my point. In the course of the ministration of Travis Green, the atmosphere was charged up with God's presence but two guys came up after him and cracked some jokes. People laughed and laughed but guess what, the atmosphere became polluted and the jokes quenched the flow of the spirit of God. The saddest thing was that most people in the meeting were not aware of what had happened.
Comedy has its place in the society but not in spiritual matters. If you want to feed the flesh, then go for comedy shows and do not bring it as a part of the gospel. A program meant to thank and praise God, minister to the sick, preach the sinners has become a meeting for jesting. We are preaching another gospel with comedy which is not the gospel of Christ.
Ephesians 5:4 AMP says:
Let there be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking, because such things are not appropriate [for believers]; but instead speak of your thankfulness [to God].
EPHESIANS 5:4 NET: Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting – all of which are out of character – but rather thanksgiving.
