I have heard people say "the good old days".They say the seventies, eighties, nineties and early twenties are better off than today. Some say that they wish that the economy is as good as the good old days. All these statements show us what we desire in life. We all desire good things and when we don't see them, we wish that the "good old" days could come back.
People always compare the past with the present and use it to predict the future. Forecasting is good but we do it with our limited minds. We look at the past, compare with the present and say, the future will be bleak. Some people say that they wish they were in the seventies, eighties and nineties. But the bible says otherwise in regards to this.
Ecc 7: 10 says, ( 10 Do not say, "Why were the old days better than these?" For it is not wise to ask such questions). The bible says that you are not wise if you compare the past with the future. I know that things are more expensive than before. I also know that the dollar rates are getting higher and the price of oil is dropping. Also, I know that people and countries have not come out of the global recession but I love the way God put it in the Bible to encourage us about the future.
Ecc 7 : 8 says ( 8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride). This scripture makes me understand that my future will be better than my present and its challenges. Also, it makes me know that whatever good I have enjoyed or had in the past can't be better than my future because it will be better than my past. It also shows me that I should be patient.
The Israelites wish they could go back to Egypt when they were faced with death. They also said the garlic they ate in Egypt was better that the manna God had made available to them. Lot's wife looked back after they had been warned not to look back by the angel. With this, a question comes to mind. Why do we always desire the past more than the future?
People always desire the past when they are faced with issues and challenges. The Israelites wanted the past when God was leading them. This shows that people will always long for the past because they think the process God is taking them through is too long and painful. A few people long for the past because they don't want to grow up and take responsibility. They think like some children who desire to be children forever.
Let us forget about the past with its successes, failures, victories, good economy, etc and press on to the prize and the future. The word of God says that the later shall be better than the former. We all should believe what God has said more than our feelings, fears, trials, worries, failures and present circumstances. The future will certainly be better than our past and present. This is God's word and we should hold onto it.
Jer 29:11says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (KJV)". The scripture says the thoughts " I have" and not the thoughts "I had". This shows that God's thoughts of peace, love, happiness for us are real and they are more related to the future and not for the past. Wilson Ileogben.
